We chose this particular type of brass due to its superior machine ability and durability. After machining the body, it is sent to a local powder coater for completion. The head grille is cut from bronze cast and machined to a mirror finish. The mesh windows are then removed during the same process before the head grille is sent off for medical-grade nickel plating. The base is made from 380 grade brass. It’s a solid brass round that we cut and form in our very own 8-axis turning center. When a core becomes magnetized, the lamination permeability is reduced. The advantage of this transformer for this type of microphone is that we were able to reduce turn count and increase wire size, thus reducing DCR [DC resistance], while maintaining correct impedance conversion. The benefits of using a toroidal transformer are many, though with benefits come difficulties. If a toroidal transformer is made well, its specifications are simply unbeatable, as the entire core is encased by the windings leaving no area open for leakage. However, the core must be large enough to ensure it doesn’t saturate too early. Our core size, though quite large, still make a reasonably compact toroidal transformer that is perfect for this microphone. Its characteristics are very smooth with no frequency ring or non-linear response within the listening curve. This tube is well-known for its low noise and pleasant amplification at audio frequencies. In fact, it was one of the very few tubes that was designed specifically for audio frequencies rather than the more generic wider frequency ranged medium and sharp cut off pentodes and general use triodes that have been made by the millions and many of which are used by microphone manufacturers today. The BeesNeez team has spent decades searching for and researching tubes for microphones. The benefits of this can be heard across the entire range. For this particular model, we really have made an exciting find.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the post-war 1940’s, Brimar and Mullard set out to specifically design and manufacture an incredibly quiet EF86 based tube. This tube was designed to have the lowest possible self-noise and still remain true to the specifics and design of the EF86. In order to keep the self-noise as low as possible, the tube’s grid (where the soundwaves enter the tube to be amplified) was re-designed to leave the tube through the head rather than, as it was previously, from the base. This design improvement (also seen on the AC701K microphone vacuum tube) was a distinct advantage as it keeps the low level easily permeable incoming audio away from the noise associated with the heating element of the tube. Sadly, due to the changes that would be needed by product manufacturers to use this new design, it never took off as a widely used variant. The tube manufacturer then aimed its sights at the DIY audio amplifier market. However, this also didn’t take off, so the design was shelved and the remaining tubes were stored. After researching and trialing this tube in the B67-269, we bought them all and will have enough tube stock to support this model throughout its very long lifetime.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis tube is a real game changer for us as EF86 tubes are getting so hard to purchase in usable quantities and many of those that are available today are either noisy or fail to pass the necessary tests to be used in a microphone. There are some currently manufactured EF86 tubes, but these do not even come close to the beauty of their vintage counterpart and do not even get a look in. Our Brimar\/Mullard 86 designated tube is truly a remarkable tube and is so perfect for this application.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-lineheight=\"30px\" data-fontsize=\"30\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOur Transformer\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDue to the enormous success of\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/beesneezproaudio.com\/product\/clone-u87i\/\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ethe B87i C microphone\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e– largely stemming from its huge toroidal transformer, we decided to use this form factor also in the B67-269. The benefits of this transformer type are numerous, giving us a great platform to ensure excellent impedance conversion and perfect common mode rejection in signal balancing. The original U67 used a BV12 UI30 core transformer. This original transformer had a third winding that was used in a negative feedback filter network to assist in the overall sound sculpting. Most clone manufacturers omit this tertiary winding (due to its complexity) and opt for a simple circuit. To make a truly accurate clone microphone, we use this tertiary winding in the same way it was initially used. This winding is a huge part of the overall sound of the Neumann U67.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-lineheight=\"30px\" data-fontsize=\"30\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eOur Circuit\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn many microphones, the circuit represents merely a few percentage points. This, to some extent, is also true in the U67. However, this circuit, unlike many others, does direct the audio flow into various feedback and filter componentry and, even though the sonic footprint of the circuit is negligible, the overall implementation is critical to the finished sonics of the U67. Our circuit is true to form, and all filters\/feedback are in place. For the more critical user, our circuit also has the following switching: Broadcast filter, High pass filter and Pad. The B67-269 is also a multipattern microphone with 9 available patterns from Omni through to Cardioid and Figure 8.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCompared to other models, there are relatively few U67 clone microphones available today. It has been said that this is due to similar microphones still being currently produced. However, it is more likely due to the complexity of the circuit and sound of the venerable U67. The 251 fully utilizes the split backplate multichambered design of the CK12 which is largely responsible for the incredible sonic qualities of the ELA M251 microphone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSome of the available clones in the market use different versions and brands of the multichambered CK12 capsule; some even use our BeesNeez CK12 for their 251 clones. However, others have opted to use a similar-looking but vastly different non-multichambered edge terminated K67 style capsule and give it a “CK12 style” name. A true 251 microphone clone absolutely needs a true-to-form CK12 capsule; otherwise, it simply will not sound as it should. We at BeesNeez can accurately put forward that we have now made more\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/beesneezproaudio.com\/product\/beesneez-ck12-capsule\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCK12 capsules\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ethan the original manufacturer AKG ever did, giving us a distinct advantage in this regard.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother area where BeesNeez excels is in the microphone output transformer design and manufacture. We have spent tens of thousands of hours researching and developing our skills and knowledge to fully understand what makes a great transformer. The original 1960s Telefunken ELA M251 had a Haufe T14\/1 transformer. This was an L lamination dual bobbin humbucking transformer that had an unusually high core stack with non-linear shaped bobbins. This shape, we can assume, was more due to the necessary use of available parts rather than form and function. The small size of this transformer would have made it very complicated for the engineers at the time to create the necessary characteristics that were required for this component. Many of the other clone manufacturers have decided to try and recreate this transformer; however, it is widely known that the modern versions do not sound the same as the originals due to no winding documentation existing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese days, with the invention of glass amorphous toroidal core technology, transformers that were once a weak point of any design can be made in such a way that they aid and assist the design rather than bottleneck it. A great transformer needs to accomplish only a few things: accurate impedance conversion and musical but linear frequency output. The challenge with early designs was as such: inductance requires a higher laminations count and higher turns count to achieve sufficient inductance for linear low-frequency output. A higher turn count requires a thinner wire size so that the wire can fit on the bobbins. Higher turn count, in turn, creates higher capacitance, which restricts high-frequency linearity. In addition to this, overall DCR (direct current resistance) needed to match the circuit so as to not overload the preamplifier. These problems, however, are a thing of the past when winding properly designed glass amorphous toroidal transformers. In our transformer, we have increased the inductance by a factor of six! We have also reduced the turns count by a factor of three and more than halved the winding capacitance as well as using wire sizes more than twice the original size. This equates to a transformer that is perfect for the task and sonically amazing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnother thing that makes our BN251 different from other clones is that we search the world for NOS vintage vacuum tubes as we feel that no currently made tube can offer the sonics of its NOS vintage counterpart.
