For more than four decades, Numark has seamlessly combined an in-depth understanding of DJs’ needs with cutting-edge technology, leading the way in the DJ industry. From its early days, Numark has continually innovated, creating performance tools that cater to the entire spectrum of the DJ world, from hobbyists to seasoned professionals.
Founded in Edison, New Jersey in 1971 by Harry and Robert Kotovsky, Numark quickly gained a reputation for its mixers, turntables, and speaker enclosures. During the Disco era, Numark was considered one of the leading manufacturers in the DJ industry, thanks to its commitment to quality and innovation.
The 1980s saw Numark making significant strides with the introduction of the world’s first mixer with a built-in sampler, the DM1775. Before the DM1775, DJs were limited in their ability to integrate samples into their sets. This mixer revolutionized the DJ experience by allowing instant recording and playback of samples, enabling DJs to enhance their performances with on-the-fly drops of beats, sound effects, or even their own voices.
Numark continued to push the envelope in 1990 with the launch of the world’s first dual-well CD player, the CD-5020. This innovation marked a significant shift from analog to digital music sourcing, setting a new standard for DJ equipment design and functionality.
In 1991, Numark was acquired by Jack O’Donnell, the former head of sales and marketing for Stanton Magnetics. Under his leadership, Numark intensified its focus on technological advancements and innovative designs, rapidly becoming a standout in a market traditionally dominated by mixers, turntables, and CD players.
As the 1990s progressed, DJs began to embrace computers as their primary music source. Numark responded to this trend by introducing the DMC-1, one of the first DJ computer software controllers. This allowed DJs to transition seamlessly from CDs to software, maintaining their familiar setup while leveraging the benefits of digital media.
Even with the growing dominance of digital media, Numark did not neglect traditional turntablists. In 2002, Numark released the groundbreaking TTX turntable, which featured a sleek, rounded design and numerous innovative features. The TTX challenged the conventional turntable design and set new standards across the industry.
The early 2000s also saw the rise of digital media in the consumer world, highlighted by the advent of Apple’s iPod. Numark quickly adapted to this shift with the release of the HDCD-1 in 2003, the first DJ playback system with a built-in hard drive. This innovation eliminated the need for DJs to carry bulky binders of CDs or a computer, offering a compact and efficient solution for music storage and playback.
Today, Numark is the largest manufacturer of DJ equipment globally, with a vast distribution network and sales that double those of its nearest competitor. Numark’s digital DJ controllers are the industry standard, continuing the legacy of excellence established by its early mixers. The introduction of the NS7 motorized DJ controller exemplifies Numark’s blend of technological expertise and DJ-focused product development. The NS7 delivers a performance with digital media that replicates the look, feel, and sound of vinyl, blurring the lines between different eras of DJing.
