Lapel microphones (also known as lav, or lavalier) are small microphones that can be worn on the body via a clip (attached to an item of clothing such as a collar, tie or shirt. They are discrete microphones used extensively on stage, theater, or anywhere else where hands-free operation is a requirement. The end of the Lapel cable usually connects to a small, battery operated body-pack that transmits the audio signal wirelessly to a receiver (sold separately or bundled together with the microphone). Some Lapel mics, such as the Shure SM11, can be connected directly to the mixer.
